As my chemistry teacher always used to say, ‘be a proton, go to Groton’. Because he was proud of his hometown, he would also say ‘be photon, be seen’ - lots of chemical sound bites and twists. Of course when you look at some of the data, such as the fact that Groton was founded in 1705, you start to wonder at the significance of such a date or number. The primus NGC 1705 is up in space with a couple of late dwarfs in it so does NGC mean ‘Near Groton Constellation’? Groton, like many municipals, has three good quality hotels, the Holiday Inn, the Marriott and the Motel 8, many fine restaurants, and a beach park, but it is the things that make Groton unique, special that you want to see. The War of Independence fort and museum are an interesting places to go - but if motors, not muskets, are more your level then there’s the naval submarine museum. No matter what you are looking for: land, sea or space, with Groton you have a perfect destination with a secret code word, NGC 1705.
